History (If anybody really cares!)

In 2004, a letter supporting a Proposition 2 1/2 override was published on a local school PTA website. After being told that the PTA wasn't allowed to actually campaign for anything -- regardless of how important it may be for the schools -- the letter was moved to a new, privately-owned and operated, website which was clearly named the "NotThePTA" website (cute?).

NotThePTA grew rapidly during the 2005 Sandwich Override (and the subsequent Underride), generating almost 3,000 "hits" on some days. The basic premise was to provide access to facts and an opportunity to vent on the issues of the day. It also provided a different perspective on the news of the day -- one that could not be obtained by reading any of the local papers.

There is no disputing that the anonymity provided by NotThePTA provided safe cover for many to engage in some serious mud slinging and rancid rhetoric. But -- since the mud was flying from all sides ... with minimal (if any) censoring, it was an "equal opportunity" mud flinging contest!

To avoid any appearance of impropriety, NotThePTA's plug got pulled when the founder was elected to the School Committee in 2006.

It has become become painfully obvious that few people pay attention to local government until it is too late. It has also become obvious that anyone who relies on the local press for "fair and balanced" coverage of local issues will also be receiving a healthy dose of distortion along with their "news". Even worse than relying on local media, far too many people rely on the rumor and hearsay they pick up at the local soccer fields, the school parking lot, or the Stop and Shop deli counter.

Because of that,  a "new and improved" NotThePTA was resurrected in July of 2010.
