Now What?

At a recent School Committee meeting a very vocal anti-pipeline person got up to speak-out against the proposed gas transmission line.

Later, during the same meeting, the same person put on his very vocal pro-pool person hat to speak in favor of getting the pool open as soon as possible.

The Superintendent, as usual, handled the situation very smoothly and said the problem was being reviewed and that they were also looking at improving energy efficiency, and possibly installing a gas heating system in the pool area.

Uh oh.

Now What?

Does he support the Superintendent's potential renovation plans which could certainly increase natural gas usage at the High School?  Or does he standby the "Gas is Bad - We're all going to be incinerated"  mantra?

Granted a 20" gas transmission line is not the same as increasing the gas flow on the feeder line to the School Pool --- but the gas in the feeder line probably made most its trip across the Country along a 20" transmission line --- which must have gone by the end of somebody's street!

So,  is the issue still just safety?

Bobby I bet that if the right person spoke to the gas company they would hook a free line to the pool and also charge the town at a reduced usage rate to heat the pool.

That is a discussion we all should
be waiting to hear, Saving money

THIS ENTIRE ISSUE IS BULLSHIT. Ooops, forgive me Bob. I used CapsOn. Doesn't anyone else think that we should be using the limited time available at SCMeetings to deal with the REAL issues that do impact children? Just the fact that two of our favorite pool supporters were re-elected shows how much the town really cares about the school. That speaker reminds me of Mary Hartman Mary Hartman. You know that nothing of sense will come out of his voice box. Nope, pure BS Bob and sadly, beyond our direct control since we all missed a chance at the voting booth due to the way most people feel nothing they can do, or say will change anything in this town. Sad day..again.

Truth Maker -

Now you get it! Maybe this group is not as nuts as everyone thinks. The impact of the gas line should be balanced with other benefits to the town. Safety features such as new water lines, bike paths to compensate for the removal of trees, reduced rates or new lines for public buildings for their product...these points should all be on the table. This "distraction" might actually bring additional benefits and infrastructure to the town. Now if we could get NG to pay for a new public safety complex everyone would be happy. HA!

Problem is that NG already has approvals to go down the center of the Service Road. If they don't get approval for Plan B --- which takes pipe out of roadway and puts it further from houses, they will go back to Plan A and start digging up the street.

This isn't the first gas line in the world. There are no unique safety issues involved here.

The Truth Maker had an opportunity to watch the recent school committee meeting and the irrational and untruthful speakers addressing the school committee in regards to why they think the proposed gas line should go some where else.
The first thing that comes to mind is this subject is not under the preview of the School committee, where they have any powers to alter or divert it some where else.

Every one is concerned for the safety of every child, how about your neighbors ? Where you seem to think that no one lives.[Under the High Tension Lines]as was expressed by more then one speaker.
That is one of the most misleading, deceptive idea that this NOT IN MY BACKYARD group has been spouting ever since it decided they would try to derail the train six years after it left the station.

Why not speak about the present gas line that has been in place at the high school, heating the pool when it is operational. Is that any less dangerous to the same children this NOT IN MY BACKYARD group has been attempting to say it is only about the safety of the children? When this group attempt to use the mantra of saving children[fine and noble concerns]why not include the adults in the same picture. Oh that does not have the same sound bite as attempting to cause some sort of a scare into rational people.

Perhaps had this NOT IN MY BACKYARD group actually did some homework to actually increase any safety questions , rather then attempting to cause a panic among the community, we would be far better off.

Perhaps if they had engaged this process when it was first proposed, it might have gone another route?

What I will tell you truthfully is that I do not want this line in my backyard, where I can reach out and touch this 24/7 cancer stick, called the power lines. Where at present every two years the ground is complety clear cut, even taking down trees that are not part of there property.

Where by physical count more of your fellow citizens are presently living, then what is along the proposed line in your part of town.

Every excuse that this NOT IN MY BACKYARD group has thrown out to attempt to provide a reasonable solution to has been countered with a reasonable answer.

This is not, never has been, about safety at all. It is all about put it my backyard and not in yours period.

OMG there surely must be a new group starting a petition against the unbelievable massacre of trees, oops, I mean sound barrier material, along Quaker Meeting House Road. This is disgusting. I mean, all of those beautiful laws along QMH being ripped up to install a 12 foot wide highway for bicycle people. Who cries for the manicured lawns, the beautiful shrubs laying on the ground awaiting the chipper and dare I mention this was done without the consideration of safety impacts on our large population of chipmunks, squirrels and racoons who thrive in this now VERY NOISY neighborhood of South Sandwich. Where were the public safety meetings with the Sierra Club posted prior to the buzz of the chain saws. Everyone knows that PinOak tree wood chips are highly flammable. What a blight to the neighborhood and not so much as ONE SINGLE COMPLAINT from the hundred or so families that have had their front lawns ripped up. Perhaps the QMH Road families need to start a rumor that the new gas pipeline IS INDEED moving to QMH Road because that other road in town just carries too much political weight. Now all of the houses along QMH Road will have to listen to dangerous, home devaluing sounds of vehicular traffic that is stuck, bumper to bumper as it tries to get of the island every weekend. I wonder if the QMH Road homeowners can borrow public forum at the School Committee meetings since they really don't use that time for processing school needs anyway. OK so it starts here today folks. I have heard that the Service Road residents were successful in their political endeavor to force movement of the new gas line to a new area of town that usually does not complain much. The new gas main route will be directly down the middle of Route 6 heading east from the canal to Exit 3. It will then proceed down QMH Road and turn left on Cotuit Road thence out Farmersville, etc, etc, to its terminus. Yup, the power of that School Committee is amazing. What a platform for change in the community as long as it isn't in my backyard. Philosopher George Berkeley was correct in his analysis...A LOT OF TREES HAVE FALLEN ON QMH Road...and no one has heard them fall...OK OK so Berkeley did not actually say that about trees in the forest but hell, it makes my point. Well, at least to those who live on THAT other road.

Greg great posting. A reality check that needs to be performed by the Not In My Backyard folks.

Once all the trees are felled and the new sidewalk is in place, it will be an improvement to those living and using this part of town. It should also make for some of the children finding a way to walk to school, instead of riding buses. I really do not see this as a bike path as was originally mentioned by the town?

You forgot to mention that no one lives along QMH road, thus it is a good place to sink a new gas line.
