The New Sandwich School Department Theme Song ....

Ironically, at the same time time that Sandwich takes a giant step forward through school consolidation and reconfiguration it takes a giant leap backwards to the Bad Old Days of Union theatrics and bullying. Interestingly, a few years back several teachers complained privately to the School Committee about bullying  -- but because they weren't willing to go public, there was little that could be done. One Committee member did publically criticize a union member by name for bullying and was immediately slapped with a grievance demanding an apology. In response, she said she would rather sit naked in the stocks in front of the Daniel Webster than to apologize for her comments. Eventually the matter was dropped. (No stock-sitting required!)

One of the provisions of the last Teachers contract gave the Union the ability to charge all teachers a representation fee regardless of whether or not they joined the union.  Maybe, now that every employee is forced to fund this nonsense, somebody will have the courage to step up and end the embarrassment that small minority of Union leadership causes their colleagues and the entire District.

Perhaps we could kill two birds with one stone. Raise the Clark Haddad building just high enough to drop on the wicked witch! We'd have a waterfront empty lot to sell for good money and we would be rid of Laura Carlyle and her flying monkeys (the trio of bullies from SHS) once and for all!!! Every teacher that stands back quietly and allows this nonsense to continue is as culpable as the bullies themselves. No wonder families continue to stream out of our District!

This is an absolute disgrace, I would hope that somebody would have the gumption to step up and sweep this nasty little band out of the union leadership.

There's no way they should be allowed to be near our kids.

Has anybody published a list of who's on the Union Committee ?

I would like to complain to my elected representatives about how my tax dollars are being wasted on these bullies.

Nothing changes, nothing changes just gets worst and the children get to pay the price with a less then good educational experience by a group of dictators and bullies, under the guise of we know what is best for us, for us and not the school district.

More will leave this so called great school experience we offer here in Sandwich, when will the layoffs begin in keeping the Stem program alive and well or will this be another empty promise supported by the Union bullies of old/

If this continues we may just be able to close down the Forrestdal school as well as the Wing after another study to do a study done so many times it hurts.

Hooray for the new big bully put in place by a bunch of wimps that
could get the job done before and led one of the largest educational downfalls in The History of Sandwich, Talk about a revolution>

The interesting dynamic here will be the large number of 7th and 8th grade teachers shifting to the High School next year. They will probably be reluctant to speak out knowing that they will now have to share a building with the Enforcers!

Would it not be nice to fire them all, hire back the ones that are truly passionate about teaching (they would need to provide a list of references from both prior students and said students parents as part of the application process) and replace the balance with people that care and would work hard for our children instead of spending all their time filing grievances and then hiding behind the union.

A non-union and efficient school system, with.a teaching staff that was compensated based on their accomplishments, the sky would be the limit!!! I am willing to bet the list of applicants would be long and distinguished and our children, the entire school system and the town would be better off because of it.

The last post (12:19) is EXACTLY what a Charter School is. Any wonder so many Sandwich kids are at Sturgis?

Following the 2 comments above...tenure was just struck down in CA:

http://www.nbcnews.com/news/education/california-teacher-tenure-laws-ruled-unconstitutional-n128131

...and this was just in the Cape Cod Times today:
http://www.capecodonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20140612/NEWS11/140619911

The article interestingly notes that "Florida, for example, put all teachers hired after 2011 on an annual teaching contract, which essentially did away with tenure protections."

This is exactly what Sturgis does. Their teachers are on a one-year contract. You don't perform...oh,well. But that is a non-issue for teachers there because they are passionate about kids and teaching, and they want to be there.

Sometimes, stains just keep coming back -- in both carpets and School Districts!

Former Superintendent, Dr. Mary Ellen Johnson developed a School Committee Policy on Bulling which also prohibits bullying by any and all adults. She got the the policy approved by the School Committee although a couple of members were against it as you can imagine. We do not allow students to bully each other at any school related event whether in the locker room or on the football field and this same policy that is in place does not allow adults to bully each other on school property. The administration needs to follow up and strictly enforce the policy.
