Watch out ... It's Pie in the Sky !!

There must be something in the water around here (besides what has already traced back to the MMR !).

Years ago, somebody recognized that the Police and Fire headquarters were under-sized, slowly sliding into the marsh, and susceptible to being washed out to sea if The Big One ever comes.  A study was done, land was earmarked and then ... somebody got distracted.

We've built school buildings -- an unavoidable and necessary task.  (This is where many people will grumble and chant "We wouldn't have this problem if we didn't have to build those Goddamn schools for kids that moved here from Over The Bridge!")  BUT -- we got distracted when it came time to provide the money  to properly maintain them.  Which is why we're chatting about a $15-30 million repair bill for the Wing --  (See the BOS presentation slides here)

We spent over $3 million to renovate a Town Hall that now holds less employees than the pre-renovation building.  The renovated building does have a second floor auditorium.  BUT, so don't the 4 large school buildings we already own, and already pay to heat, and light, and (sort of) maintain.  AND, the schools all have sufficient parking and decent septic systems -- something Town Hall does not have.  We continue to maintain several satellite town office buildings to handle the departmental overflow.  We even recently increased the number of town office buildings by moving the Rec Dept into a lovely lodge facility overlooking the water (a building originally bought to provide recreational opportunities and potential revenue.)

Many hours have been spent Studying and discussing a $14 million library in South Sandwich.  Many fewer hours have been spent discussing the fact that the Library can't afford the building it already has and have had to reduce operating hours this year to save money.  The Library is a huge asset to the Town and I LIKE the library -- but I'm not sure how we would pay to operate another library -- even if we could figure out a way to pay to build it!  (Somebody suggested the new Library was a actually a great idea -- that way when historians wrote the story about how the Police and Fire Departments fell into the marsh, we'd have someplace to put the book!)

The Capital Planning Committee came up with a list of some $26 million in assorted repairs and upgrades to buildings that have not been maintained for decades.  That list is on a shelf somewhere.

Now, folks are captivated by talk of a new Boardwalk that will start in the Village (behind the Town Hall Annex that we can't afford to bring into current building code compliance) run across the Marsh towards the Police and Fire Headquarters (same compliance problem!) through Town Neck and over to the Marina -- to gaze upon the probably-soon-to-be-closed power plant.  $50,000 of Community Preservation Funds may soon be "invested" in planning this adventure and only an additional $3 -5 million are estimated to be needed to finish it.  I can't imagine how this project could generate "real" economic development -- unless you owned the lumberyard!  ("Hey, Ethel!, Pack-up the kids -- we're drivin' down to Sandwich to walk on their wooden sidewalk!  I'll even buy you a large coffee at Mary Lou's !!").  Actually, maybe another Boardwalk is a good idea -- since the one we already have has been condemned as unsafe.

I'm sensing a theme.  Somebody needs to be willing to stick their neck out and start kicking some ass!  No more gathering consensus and community input.  No more sacred cows -- like Nike says -- "Just Do it!".

Serious times call for serious leaders.
Who is willing to say: "No, bad idea" on the record.
Who is willing to say: "We cant afford it" on the record.
Who is willing to say: "You Mr./Mrs. Committee member are not doing your job" on the record.
Serious times call for serious leaders.
Sandwich has none.

ANOTHER DISRUPTIVE FORCE

Bob Guerin was not disruptive, he was a business leader that didn't let the b.s. smoke and mirrors crowd stop his leading, which pissed off lots of groups! Those smoke and mirrors games played for years on the stupid school committee members i.e. Marshall, failed on working on Guerin. Marshall, Crossman, Linehan and Kangas don't have a clue, never will have a clue and hasn't gotten jack sh t accomplished for our children. Destruction of all positive things in our school district and the continued ruthless protections for the SEA Union leaders and Comm School Pool groupies is all those 4 women care about.

ALL CAPS WHY ARE YOU SCREAMING? Go back and look at what Guerin/Simmon accomplished in couple of yrs. They accomplished more in a few years than Marshall has in 22 years!

WHAT A MESS THIS SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEMBERS ARE NOW! Marshall couldn't lead them all out of a paper bag for gods sake!

We will just have to see what the 24th brings.Lets see what peole who have supported a judges ruling say if they loose the case. But there will be something with that process as well

Thanks for the kind words of encouragement and support but I am taking a pass on any additional public service. I gave a little more than 10 years on various Town boards and committees and loved every minute of it. I strongly encourage any and all interested, engaged, talented somebodies to step forward and give it a try. I can attest that its fun, rewarding, important, and difference-making work.

8:33 There hasn't been a judges ruling yet? And your sentences are failing in communicating what your points are. Ms. Carlisle wasn't your Sandwich english and writing teacher was she?

The school committee failed to file a ruling with a judge within 21 days of the D.A.'s opinion. (gotta ask again why the cracker jack school attorney failed to file within the 21 days?) The D.A. wrote an opinion that open meeting law appeared to have been violated. The D.A. & A.G. offices have both said publically, only a judge can rule on the validity of a contract. The 24th is gonna be very interesting.

Just to let you know he did say appeared he said the meeting was violated. never saw any DA or AG give that response. Oh well we all shall see

8:33/12:17 -- nice to see you got the cap locks fixed. Still not sure what you're trying to say. I realy hope you're not on the School Committee -- or even an SHS grad!

12:17 FYI The D.A. Shack and A.G Boston office both said publically their role is not to rule on validity of contracts. The D.A. and A.G. just render opinions it's not a court order. Both agencies said it was not in their perview to rule on validity of contracts, only a judge can rule, once again the school committee's cracker jack attorney failed to file for the school comm. within the 21 days of the D.A. opinion. If they had filed within 21 days the judge would have ruled on the validity of Dr. Johnson's contract months ago!

Looks like cracker jack school attorney will cost us even more money again, i think we overpay him for his dragged out union negotiations.
Sherry says he's the only attorney we have ever used.
Term Limits Ms. Marshall are a wonderful thing.

The school and town attorneys better not even think they are gonna pay off Dr. Johnson for the last two years of her contract using my tax dollars!
Do our children a favor and resign from your seats, so our schools can heal and move on from this disaster and keep Dr. Johnson moving us forward!

Watch how sneaky Marshall gets reporting on the lawsuit and witholding any financial settlements.

Chair Marshall and 3 stooges better think again if they are even considering using my tax dollars to pay off Dr. Johnson's last two years on her contract. Let the fab four pay Dr. Johnson off with their own money!

Agree with 2/23...2:38 PM
The letter from the Assistant DA was not a ruling, but the schools attorney gave advise that allowed the SC to act on it as if it was a ruling. I was shocked to read a Cape Cod Times reporter in today's paper characterise Assitant DA Shack's letter as a ruling. I think one reason the SC has gotten away with this outrage, is due to the fact that enforcement for open meeting law changed from local DA offices to the Attorney General around the time of this fiasco that has cost Sandwich dearly. Hopefully the judge will wade through the confussion and seattle the DA "ruling" issue absence any more political stuff.

And let us not forget where projects, like Mr. Burbanks pie in the sky, are concerned, the tens of thousands maybe even hundreds of thousands of tax payer dollars in staff pay that is consummed when someone comes up with one of these ideas. One reason Sandwich never gets anything done, is because of stuff like this eating up the time of town staff. They can't control their own work. Our taxpayer dollars are eaten up too. Thanks Bob, pie in the sky is right.

I also like the letter in the Enterprize that asks why would we create a walkway away from Sandwich businesses. I wonder who will be putting in a bid, should the CPC money get approved for the consulting work?

there was a letter in the local rag this week from the Boardwalk guy -- he claimed no tax dollars were being used for the project.

BullX^%#. He asked the CPA Committee for almost $50K to "study" the idea. CPA funds ARE tax dollars!!

I have to assume it will die at Town Meeting -- but I think we should fire every member of the CPA Committee for not having the ba%$# to say it was a really stupid idea that we can not afford and do not need.
