Now What?

These results summarized from a draft copy of the only actual outside audit done on the Community School.

I understand the tunnel-vision of the Pool Supporters -- they want their pool regardless of what it costs everyone else.  But, is anybody disconcerted by the fact that FinCom supported spending almost a million dollars without asking how the pool could be maintained going forward?

Question of the Day:

If the Community School lost money running the pool -- despite having a healthy revenue stream, how will the School Department run the pool with a reduced revenue stream resulting from substantially reduced public hours?

I don't think I heard that answered last night.

Election day is Thursday, Ballots are also available in the Town Clerk's Office until noon on Wednesday.

It appears that FinCom has followed Marie's lead --- the Budget "Watchdog" has become just another leg humping poodle!

Why haven't we heard from school committee? if they own it and are going to be required to fund going forward, shouldn't they have spoken Monday -- or anytime?

The Finance Committee should be ashamed of themselves. They completely shirked their duty on this issue.

This is really wonderful news! Our community has its pool and our children a future world of aquatic learning opportunities (just as soon as we hire an aquatics engineering instructor).
Of course, it’s a bit unclear what it will cost to operate the pool – electric, chemical and staffing needs have not yet been documented or explained - but that’s not likely to be any more than $50,000 or $100,000 per year. So, no worries!
I have total confidence that the School Committee and Finance Committee both gave annual operating costs a great deal of thought and that they know just where that money can be found.
It’s too bad that so many Negative Nancy’s continue to fail understand and fully appreciate the sense and strategy behind prioritizing and spending $1 million or so on a pool just after town taxes were raised $4 million last year with plans for an additional $20 to $30 million in new taxes for next year.
Its only money people! Get to the polls and vote YES!

I have never commented here before, but here I go. PLEASE remember to vote today, we can still beat this pool cost. I agree that it's a money-pit that we can not afford to support.

I was wondering what poitical action group paid for all of the nice signage, does any one know ?

Did the school pay some portion of this bill?

We all know now that the pool will be operated and maintained by the School Committee.

The big question is where will that money come from after the pool is rebuilt[do we have a little fudge money in the estimate]to rebuild it to provide another close to $200,000 each year going forward. Or will we be subjected to another override to pay this annual bill?

Apparently no one is to concerned about that situation and that is to bad.

i doubt the school paid anything. the poolies did form a ballot question committee to collect/spend for this election.

Ted Scudder. Sir, you have removed all doubt from my mind. You must be the village idiot. Every village saves that honor for one special person and it is YOU!

Only an idiot calls someone and idiot.

That said, congrats to the pool people, but I am afraid this will all backfire on you.

My children are so lucky to be able to go to a school with a pool. They are not very bright and will do well in swimming. They can float, but thanks to Dr. Canfield, the will become Spitz like.

Just cough up the cash. I want them to get a good education and I now can move to Bourne and pay less taxes yet have them enjoy the pool.

This be America at its best, don't you think.

The talk has allready changed to who will get terminated to pay the bill long term?

What other programs will be reduced in order to find the capitol needed to pay a very huge bill for maintaining and managing the pool.

Will an override be needed to pay the bill for DR Johnson or will it come out of the educational dollars for our school children?

I am very afraid that our school district will have many more challenges financially in the ensuing years that may well change the course of educational opportunities for those students that live here in Sandwich, as some of the questions above have fallen on deaf ears and that my friends is not encouraging if you have children at home.

TM/CJ, Good questions. The budgets are done year by year and everybody involved has techniques to A. get as much as they can, and B. move budget issues around in a time frame that satisfies the latest narrative. This is true of both the schools and municipal. We are paying a very low per pupil and we have a very low number of municipal employees to provide the services we need. Priorities have to be rethought each year. It is a challenging system. Leadership, process, (which includes a rather new Charter and of course compliance with State legislation) and public input drive it. But I'm afraid a lot of it is "inside ball" that masquerades as transparent public discourse. There are political power plays as well. I sometimes think the biggest problem is the lack of a comprehensive narrative about why decisions are made. Let's face it, political speak is generally about talking down to citizens and thinking we are too stupid to get the real deal.

And ... 9 times out of 10, the public will not get (or care about) the real deal.

Welcome Back.

To my friend that posted on 10.11 Yes it is unfortuned that in most cases some find we are to stupid[your words] to get it. It is that type of thinking that will get you in trouble every time, it is just a matter of when that time comes to bite you, you know where.

You find out that even when you are involved from the inside of things that it is very difficult to make changes that clearly need to be made and for what ever reason, you can never do.

How do you defend groups like our present SEIC that have not accomplished one worthwhile project since there inception and yet get to spend our tax dollars that show absolutly no return on the dollars spent to the town itself. The crying shame of it is that this group still owes this company they engaged another $80,000, not to say other outstanding bills of useless help for our town.

Who I ask, is getting the benefit from these percentage deals, behind closed doors is the question of the year.

To 503 you are absolutly correct in your post and it is that type of apathy which allows this type of process to continue to waste good taxpayers money to enrich some one else, outside of Sandwich. Well perhaps not in all cases??

Perhaps at our next election we can find two concerned souls that really care and show by there actions that they care for our town and do not double speak to hear them selves talk.

Anon 10:11 -- many words, little substance. It boils down to people not paying attention and allowing their Town to be run by amateurs -- nice folks who are retied, unemployed, self-employed or looking for self-promotion.
